Writing articles is a great way to gain backlinks (you are not doing this not for traffic generation purposes).

With this purpose in mind you don’t need to write articles that relate directly to your micro-niche.  In fact you don’t need to write articles that relate at all.

Your purpose is in writing articles on any topic that will get picked up quickly.

To ensure this happens write about popular niches such as weight loss, dating and beauty.

Many blogs are actively looking for high quality, informative articles.  And when these blogs reprint your articles they will print the whole article, including your bio box.

Your bio box is where you link back to the website you want to rank for.

If you are doing article submission yourself it is not necessary to submit your article to hundreds of article directories.  Focus primarily on www.ezinearticles.com and use www.goarticles.com and www.articlespace.com to supplement the first.  

(To avoid duplicate content write two variations of the same article.  The same content is fine—just make sure word-for-word it isn’t identical.)

You could also submit your article to a blog distribution network (find URL).  For $60 a month you pay for your article to be sent around the world on a drip fed content basis.

(The fact the articles are drip-fed ensures it doesn’t look spammy.  Building up links over time is the way to go.)
