What is Cyber Landlording?
If the term “cyber land lording” is new to you then now is the time to find out exactly what it entails and how you too can jump on board.
There is huge financial potential for anyone willing put this straight forward business model into practise.
In a nutshell cyber land lording involves creating a site, getting that site ranked and then leasing out the advertising space that attracts new customers for local businesses.
To clarify… you are leasing a lead generation system that uses a website as a platform.
You are selling advertising space. You are selling leads. You are not selling a website.
You own the domain name, the site and essentially the leads you generate for a local business. Leasing out a site in itself is not very targeted or specific.
Therefore you take advantage of the fact Google is very specific in how it targets its results. Google identifies websites that relate to specific niches and specific locations.
For example a local business may find it very difficult to get ranked on the first page of Google for “plastic surgeon”.
However it is relatively easy to get ranked for “plastic surgeon Edinburgh” “plastic surgeon Sydney” or “plastic surgeon Wisconsin”.
Most local businesses do not understand SEO and therefore you can create a website in their niche, in their city and dominate a micro-niche easily.
Luckily 60-90% of prospects are actively searching for businesses in their local area online through Google.
Those local businesses that don’t have a website or who don’t have a website that can be easily found in the search engines is missing out on many potential customers.
Although some businesses may pay for advertising using Google Adwords, the effects are dubious. The reality is the majority of prospects use the organic search results and not the paid advertising.
As the internet has evolved a lot over the last five years, business owners need help marketing online. (They often don’t understand direct marketing principals at all.)
For you to come and offer them a source of leads (they might not otherwise have access to) is huge.
After building a site, driving traffic to it you then rent the site to a local business or company and give them the leads your site generates.
They pay for this privilege on a monthly basis—the fee being decided by you. Depending on the niche you are in will determine how much you can charge.
Let’s take a closer look at the financial potential…
How Much Money Can I Make?
Honestly the sky is your limit. Effectively you choose how much you would like to make—whether this is two or three hundred dollars extra per week up to a very healthy full time income.
As mentioned earlier the niche you choose dictates how much you can charge per month.
For example some sites you may only charge $100 a month to have their business details listed while other sites you could easily charge $1000 a month.
And depending what your financial goals are will determine how many sites and what kinds of niches you go into.
You may or may not wish to scale your cyber land lording business.
And if you do want to scale up, you will need to have systems in place for selling and maintaining clients. And systems in place for communicating with those you outsource tasks to.
Be aware that there is a limit to how many sites you can build and manage yourself. And you may reach this limit sooner than you think.
(Much more detail about how to best scale your local model business can be found in the chapter near the end of this book.)
We would like to show you some realistic numbers…
Let’s say you are just starting out and the micro-niche you first go into doesn’t have a high profit margin.
Perhaps you can only charge $100 per month for leasing out a site.
If you replicate one site across 30 cities at $100 per month you make $3000 a month.
Let’s say you build 100 sites a month. This is not a lot. Because you are only using just shy of three micro-niches to generate these three sites across multiple cities.
100 sites a month is 10K a month which is 120K a year coming in.
You could easily double this price by raising your cost per site to $200 per month per site… Now your annual income is 240K per year.
Of course not all of this is profit. So let’s look at our out-goings.
To out-source the management and SEO of 100 sites across just 3 mirco-niches could be handles by five guys in the Philippines at $2000 per month. So 24k a year.
For domain names it cost an average of $10 each. For 100 domain names that costs $1000.
Let’s say you spend (an unlikely) $4000 on one-off software to automate your business.
Lastly there will be other small fees such as hosting, which may add up to another $1000.
Adding these out-goings up you pay 30K to generate a 240K per year income…
…Leaving you with a profit of 210K
This is a very healthy passive income that you can enjoy—while your business works for you on autopilot.
If you wanted you could leverage and scale it significantly. Or keep it as a lucrative asset that is saleable.
Exciting isn’t it?
You now have a sound understand what cyber land lording involves and how much money can be made. Let’s talk about how long it takes to actually get moving with cyber land lording…
How Quickly Can I Get Started?
How long it takes for you to get going depends on where your strengths and weaknesses lie.
We have noticed two main personality types. Those who are technical and don’t really like dealing with people.
And the reverse… those who are very social and love talking with people but who are not great with the technical side of things.
(If you don’t know what your strengths are it is definitely worth finding out. Visit www.strengthfinder2.0.com to find out yours.)
Robert got going in less than a week and took 17 days to receive his first check from a local business. But it is possible to get started sooner—in just a couple of days. Especially if you have a website building system to automate the deployment of sites.
For the “complete newbie” a typical time frame that is realistic for anyone is between 30-60 days.
If you are still sitting on the fence as to whether cyber land lording is for you, don’t worry!
Below we’ve taken an honest look at the advantages and disadvantages…
Pros of Cyber Landlording...
From an insider’s perspective we know the advantages.
Here are five of the most compelling reasons why cyber land lording is such an “untapped” online business model…
- Tangible
There are no elements that are left out or “hidden”. Cyber land lording is very concrete. You can put your hands around it, so to speak!
Right now the competition is low and it is simple and easy to make sense of and execute this online model.
- Low Effort
It is fast to get going and your efforts are rewarded swiftly, making it both satisfying and motivating.
Once your website is setup (and you have a small team working on the SEO side of things) the maintenance at your end is minimal.
- Reoccurring Income
You can create a stream of passive income which requires as much or as little effort on your part as you choose, depending how much you outsource.
Cyber land lording yields a high ROI (return on investment) where it is easy for the “average person” to make $20K a month.
- Easy to Systemize
It is advisable to outsource the majority of your business so you can focus on marketing it effectively.
Luckily for you specific parts of your business can be outsourced easily. You can train different people to do the tasks you require.
Having the right systems in place that can easily handle the number of sites you wish to create is a must.
For example, being able to replicate one site in a specific niche across multiple cities around the world will contribute hugely.
If you use the right systems (more on this later) most steps involved are easy to learn and are not technical.
- Scalable
Once the core aspects of your business are automated or systematized you can then think about scaling.
But you must ensure the systems you have in place are tried and tested first!
Only then can you scale accordingly. You can calculate the average revenue each site brings you. And then calculate how many sites you will need to create to achieve your financial goals.
And if your intention is to build a saleable asset it is easy to do this too.
Cons of Cyber Landlording...
- Learning Curve
Generally speaking there are not many disadvantages and those that exist can be easily overcome.
So you don’t get a one-sided view here are the (few) limitations of this business model.
- Setup Cost
As with any new business model that you are unfamiliar with you will have to learn what to do.
There is a learning curve (but there is with any new idea you undertake.)
There are a series of steps that you need to follow. These steps are not complicated and are spelt out to you on this site!
- Talking to Business Owners
You require money to purchase domain names and pay for hosting.
If you want to scale this business model you will need to pay for a team. SEO does require maintenance. It is easy to do yourself but is repetitive and boring—so is perfect to outsource.
To give you an idea of cost, for a team of five guys in the Philippines to ensure your sites are ranked and then remain ranked at the number one position in Google it costs $2000 a month.
But you don’t have to start here! This is something to scale up to in the future.
Generally speaking if you are not comfortable talking over the phone (or in some cases speaking face-to-face) with local business owners this can be a problem!
The good news is that past offering to have their business details listed on your site, there is little else you need to do for them.
(Remember that you are not managing a website for them. You are literally creating advertising space and allowing them to rent the leads that the site generates.)
If you are very antisocial and the thought of talking to a business owner leaves you cold, you can contract and pay a great salesperson to do this for you.
Especially if you identified earlier that your strength is with the technical side of things and dealing with people is one of your weaknesses, this is a great solution.
This way you won’t ever have to deal with business owners yourself!
- Overwhelm
When you get to a certain level with managing, maintaining and tracking your results you can fall behind.
Your success can creep up on you quickly and leave you feeling overwhelmed.
Being aware of what aspects you can automate either through software and systems or through outsourcing tasks will allow you to overcome this limitation.
Now that you’re aware of how to overcome the “limitations” of this business model let’s move forward.
All niches are not made equal! So let’s find out why…
